Let's delve into why we believe Apple's entrance into this realm is significant.
Over the past two decades, Apple has transformed new smart devices, which initially struggled to find mainstream acceptance, by revolutionizing the user experience and redefining the medium entirely.
Apple took the cumbersome smartphone with micro keyboards (remember the Blackberry?) and catalyzed its transition into mainstream use with an innovative, buttonless touchscreen.
Apple took Microsoft's underwhelming tablet concept and replaced the stylus with intuitive finger controls.
Apple successfully propelled smartwatches and wireless Bluetooth headphones into the mainstream.
Today, I believe Apple will initiate a pivotal step to usher VR into mainstream adoption. Whether they drastically improve the form factor, making it lighter, smaller, and more stylish, or they enhance the user experience by, say, eliminating controllers in favor of pure hand tracking, I am confident that Apple may redefine the AR/VR medium forever today.
There's plenty to be thrilled about. Similarly, I fully anticipate the initial sales numbers to be modest, mirroring the trend seen during most of their early launches. The first version proves the medium's potential, while the second catapults it into the mainstream.
